If there's one thing we love about the British summertime, it's the chance to sit and relax in the garden with a nice glass of wine after a long workday, or for a weekend get-together. We asked Cassie Gould, of Brighton's oldest independent wine merchant, Butler's Wine Cellar, for her top picks for some summertime drinking, and she's given us three very different choices for different tastes and moods. If you're based in the UK, you can shop her choices online through the links below. Enjoy!
To get any British summer garden party started you need some bubbles, and look no further than this multi award-winning wine made on the South Downs in Sussex. This wine has developed a remarkable balance of freshness, minerality and fullness of flavour. Layers of honey, truffle, white peach, coconut, lemon zest, Danish pastry and crushed oyster shells. A gloriously complex wine with a finish that goes on and on and leaves you wanting more.
Sherry is the most underrated and value for money wine you will find. This is not only beautifully packaged but delivers on many levels. A bold, dark sherry - think sandy beaches and salty seaweed. Hazelnuts, umami, figs. On the palate it's racy; hints of roasted pecans and salted caramel. Drink chilled, with aged cheeses and cured meats, or some salted nuts.
Fruity, fresh, rich and racy; no I'm not referring to the man of my dreams, I'm talking about this wine. Made from Rousanne and Chardonnay with minimal intervention and minimal sulphur, this could be the most voluptuous, yet drinkable, expressive, yet affordable wine you taste all year.
Many thanks to Cassie for her recommendations! Brighton locals can visit Butlers at 247 Queens Park Road, or 88 St George's Road, Kemptown - if you're elsewhere in the UK, you can still shop their huge selection online, with UK wide delivery.
